The Philadelphia Phillies organization received sad news yesterday morning that David Montgomery passed away. The former president for 17 years lost his battle with cancer at the age of 72.

David Montgomery’s legacy
Ultimately, Montgomery has been a key piece to the Phillies organization. He contributed to the design efforts of Citizens Bank Park. He worked side by side with engineers to give fans the best experience possible.
Later on, in 1997 Montgomery inherited the role of team President from Bill Giles. After taking on the role of president he did not disappoint Phillies fans. The organization was his pride and joy and from the fans, to the players he was always humble. From everyone, that he crossed paths with he was able to execute his position at a high level with kindness.
In May of 2014, Montgomery had to step away from his position in order to receive surgery for his cancer.
Surprisingly, it didn’t take long for him to return to the Phillies front office. In 2015, he became the Phillies chairman in a pivotal time for the franchise as they revamped their roster, so they could make another championship run.
As always, the fans were a key focus for the chairman. One of his projects focused on bringing the Major League Baseball All-Star game back to Philadelphia.
On April 16, 2019, Philadelphia hosted a ceremony with Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred. Later on, it was announced officially that the city of Philadelphia was awarded the 2026 All-Star game which was another accomplishment for the former team president.
Remembering David Montgomery
Again, Montgomery will forever be embedded in Phillies history for his contributions. Yesterday afternoon in St. Louis the Cardinals and Phillies, gave a moment of silence for Montgomery prior to the game.
Currently, back in Philadelphia, the flags at Citizens Bank Park will fly half staff for a week in remembrance. In 2018, the Phillies renamed their indoor training facility as the “David P. Montgomery Baseball Performance Center”. David Montgomery will always be a Phillie and a great one at that.
