Draft week conference call
On Monday, Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay hosted a conference call to talk about the draft which is coming up on Thursday. It’s officially draft week! The final mock drafts are being published and the final predictions on who will go to each team are being discussed.
The Eagles have used all of their 30 pre-draft visits, and over the last few years, their first pick has been someone they hosted for a visit. Here is what the experts thought on some of those players, the Eagles first-round possibilities and more.
Emphasis on the depth of defensive line talent
An unchanged opinion throughout the offseason, as draft prep ensued, was the depth of the defensive line talent. During draft week the grades have remained virtually the same. Todd McShay pointed out that Joe Jackson, a defensive end out of Miami, is the 19th best defensive linemen in the draft but mocked into the third round. He mentioned that when you have a guy with that talent projected in the third round, you’ve got serious depth at the position.
Some other linemen discussed included Nick Bosa, Josh Allen, Quinnen Williams, Montez Sweat, Ed Oliver, Rashan Gary, Chase Winovich, and Christian Wilkins. In his latest mock, McShay has the Eagles taking Jeffery Simmons out of Mississippi State.
Draft week prediction by McShay – Simmons in the 20s, possibly to Philly
The Eagles brought Sweat, Oliver, Gary, and Wilkins in for visits. However, the consensus is that none of these guys will fall to the Birds at 25. Simmons, alternatively, has dropped in terms of draft stock due to an ACL injury. Unfortunately, there’s also the off-field issue surrounding Simmons as well. However, McShay said that he thinks Simmons is “one of the best five football players in the draft purely off game tape.” He would put him in the same range, talent wise, as Bosa, Allen, Williams, and Oliver.
However, any team choosing Simmons with their draft pick has to be prepared for a redshirt rookie season. With the knee injury, it is unlikely Simmons will be a contributor until the 2020 season. With the Eagles just recently committing to a similar situation with Sidney Jones, to me it would be very interesting if the Eagles would do that again.
Josh Jacobs still in play for the Eagles?
Another guy the Eagles have been heavily linked to is Jacobs, the running back out of Alabama. Mel Kiper mentioned that he will be in play for the Raiders for their #24 and #27 first-round picks. They can take the first guy they desire at #4, most likely a defensive lineman, but both Kiper and McShay have mocked Jacobs to the Raiders at either #24 or #27. They think getting that multi-dimensional, complete back will really help the Raiders offense.
However, as many Eagles fans have talked about, the Eagles and Jacobs have been linked very tightly since the combine. The Eagles have met with Jacobs at several points and really love what he brings to the table. Especially for a team that values a running back by committee approach, Jacobs brings another dynamic to add to Jordan Howard and Corey Clement. However, it’s thought that he will end up an Oakland Raider.
How will the rest of draft week shake out?
I’m sure there will be thousands of different rumors through the rest of draft week. Thankfully, the mocking of corners to the Eagles has pretty much stopped. That’s positive. It will be an interesting draft across the board. There isn’t a consensus #1 pick as there typically is. It is a mystery what our home team is going to do.
For sure, it will be a fun one!
