Eagles add Hackenberg to 90 man roster
On Sunday the Eagles made a bit of a surprising move by signing former Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg. As the Eagles add Hackenberg to the roster that now gives them five quarterbacks. Obviously, Carson Wentz and Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles are safe but it now creates competition for that third quarterback spot. Maybe a change of scenery can breathe some life into the former Nittany Lions career.

Hackenberg fails to take flight
The Jets selected Hackenberg with the 51st overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Seen as a strong-armed project the Jets were hoping they had found something to work with. However, things never worked out in the Big Apple. Behind Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Ryan Fitzpatrick Hackenberg was inactive for 15 games in 2016.

Last season the 6’4 quarterback competed with Josh McCown and Petty for the starting quarterback job but ultimately lost out. Another season went by where he failed to see the field in meaningful action and the Jets threw in the towel on Hackenberg.
Opportunity in the City of Brotherly Love
Can Hackenberg resurrect his career in Philly? While it seems highly unlikely the former Jet is still just 23 years old and now has the opportunity to learn from Wentz and Foles. As for making the roster, it will be a tall task. Nate Sudfeld appears to have the advantage in the battle for the third quarterback spot.

Last Thursday against the Steelers Sudfeld completed 10 of 14 passes for 140 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Joe Callahan played the entire second half but failed to lead the offense to any points completing just eight of 18 passes. It will take a near miracle but the opportunity is at least there now for Pennsylvania native to showcase his playing ability.
What this really means
Hackenberg will have three games starting Thursday against New England to impress. While it appears Hackenberg won’t be starting any games for the Eagles if nothing else maybe he can catch the eye of the other 31 teams. Look for Sudfeld to hold off both Hackenberg and Callahan for the third quarterback spot.
