A series review: Eagles vs Bucs

Eagles vs Bucs series

Today it will be Eagles vs Bucs. These two teams will be meeting for only the 19th time. However, in the previous 18 meetings, there have been some pretty meaningful moments and games between the two teams. Currently, the Eagles lead the series 10-8. The last time these teams met was back in 2015 with the Bucs dominating 45-17. The last Eagles win came back in 2013 as Nick Foles led the birds to a 30-21 victory. What will Sunday have in store?

The very first time

The first time installment of Eagles vs Bucs came way back in 1977. The Eagles defeated the Bucs 13-3 led by Ron Jaworski at Veterans stadium. The stakes would be raised in the next meeting two seasons later. The Bucs were making their first ever playoff appearance faced off against the fourth-seeded Eagles.

Due to the Eagles and Cowboys being in the same division the Eagles faced Tampa Bay instead of the one-seeded Cowboys. With a trip to the NFC Championship game on the line, Doug Williams guided the Bucs to a 24-17 win giving the franchise their first playoff win. The Eagles would bounce back the following season advancing to the Super Bowl.

Playoff games

Following the 1979 game the next time these two teams would meet in the playoffs would be the 2000 NFC wild-card game. In front of a raucous crowd, the Birds handled their business 21-3. The Eagles victory ended a three-game losing streak against the Bucs in the series. The next season the teams would meet twice within a week. In week 17 of the 2001 season, the Eagles won 17-13 in Tampa Bay setting up a rematch for wildcard weekend in Philadelphia.

For the second consecutive season, the Eagles at home would defeat the Bucs in the wildcard round this time 31-9 to advance in the playoffs. The teams would meet again during the 2002 regular season with the Eagles winning their fourth straight game in the series. However, in the NFC Championship game, that season things would not be sunny in Philadelphia.

Darkest day in team history

Many Eagles fans view the 2002 NFC Championship game as one of the lowest points in team history. The stage seemed to be set for the Eagles to get the monkey off their back. It was the last game at Veterans Stadium. The game-time temperature was 29 degrees. The Eagles had beaten this team earlier in the year. There was no way a team from Florida would come into a cold climate and win. Unfortunately what happened on this day was flat-out tragic. The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead but things quickly turned.

Late in the fourth, the Bucs were leading 20-10 when as a desperate last gasp drive from the Eagles was closing in on points Ronde Barber returned a McNabb interception 92 yards for a touchdown. You could hear a pin drop in the stadium as there was pure silence. The Bucs would go on to blow out the raiders in the super bowl 48-21. Many knew this was the Eagles chance to win the super bowl but it wasn’t meant to be.

The next chapter

Since that day the two teams have split six meetings evenly with each side winning three times. Eagles vs Bucs has certainly had its moments. On Sunday the Eagles will aim for payback.

The last two meetings in Tampa Bay have gone the Birds way. Foles will start and his first career victory came against this team. Who will take the 19th edition of the series? Let us know below.
