Philadelphia Phillies

With the third overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, the Phillies select Alec Bohm

Bohm’s impact bat

The Philadelphia Phillies selected third overall in this years MLB draft. With that selection, they took Wichita State third basemen, Alec Bohm. Bohm has the potential to be an impact bat for the Phillies in the near future. Obviously, any time a team takes a college bat in the draft it is expected that the player is a mature player. Meaning that they have an increased time frame to make it to the big leagues. In simpler terms, this college bat is usually more seasoned that high school bats.

Bohm had a great season at Wichita State this season. He played 54 games and slashed .339/.436/.625  that adds up to a 1.061 OPS with 16 home runs and 55 RBIs.

From MLB Draft to the big leagues

As I try to do in most of the articles I write, let’s be realistic because this isn’t a fairytale land. Bohm will not be in the big league for at least a year, if not longer.

I know I just said that it could be at least a year until he makes it to the big leagues, but it could be sooner. We have seen guys like Alex Bregman and Dansby Swanson make it to the big leagues during the same year that they were drafted, this was the 2015 MLB Draft. What do Bohm, Bregman, and Swanson all have in common? They were all college level bats coming out of the draft, and this should excite Phillies fans everywhere.

It’s easy to see that Phillies’ scouting director Johnny Almaraz loves Bohm, and has confidence that he will be an impact player for the Phillies.

Not just a good player, but a good person

This tweet by Mike Kennedy is incredibly important to me because I want a guy who cares about what the team does, not just his own stats. Everything that I am hearing and reading about Bohm makes it seem like he is that player. As some of my friends and I say, we don’t want “ME PLAYERS.” Basically, this is just another way to say what I just did, a ME PLAYER is a guy who only cares about himself.

Bohm seems to be the right type of player, and it is going to be a lot of fun watching this kid progress through the minor league system. Many people believe he will hit his way through the minors. If we are making predictions, I am going to be bold. I expect to see Bohm in a major league game for the Phillies during the 2019 season. Furthermore, I think the bat will get him to the big leagues quickly.
