Odubel Herrera has had his struggles on the field with the Philadelphia Phillies this year. And now on Monday night in Atlantic City, New Jersey the situation became even more complicated. Herrera was involved in domestic violence innocent with his 20-year-old girlfriend which lead to Herrera’s arrest.
In the police report, the victim has visible injuries to her arms and neck caused by Herrera. Any charges against the 27-year-old have yet to be known but this can be nothing but trouble for the Phillies center fielder.
Herrera has a future in trouble
Herrera has only played in 39 games with the Phillies thus far in 2019. Since a slash line of .281/.325/.452 in 2017, Herrera has been on a slippery slope. He has his amount of mental break downs on the field along with being strong-willed against the coaching staff. This season the Venezuela native is now hitting a disappointing .222/.288/.341. Which are all reasons for Phillies manager Gabe Kapler establishing that he no longer had a starting role in center field.
The Phillies bought Herrera out of his final three years of arbitration in the winter of 2016/2017, giving him a five-year, $30 million dollar contract. So now under the new circumstances, he could be nearing the end in a Phillies uniform. A suspension will likely be given to Herrera from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred. And the Phillies might also hand down their own disciplinary actions. This will all be on top of anything legally that the center fielder might face.
New Phillies Center fielder
Once all the legal steps are taken and the dust clears the Phillies might now be looking for a stop gap center fielder come the trading deadline. Maybe even look inside the organization to guys like Scott Kingery or Nick Williams. Herrera still has two more years under contract till his club option years come into effect. Because he has now forced the Phillies hand this might end up costing him his own career in Philadelphia earlier rather than later.
