The Philadelphia 76ers summer league has come to an end. The team played five games in the process. The Summer league changed the playoff format to the top eight teams playing for the Summer League championship. The remaining teams play just one consolation game and then head back home. The Memphis Grizzles left Las Vegas as the 2019 Summer league champions. Let’s see how the Sixers faired in their week out in Fabulous Las Vegas.
The Sixers opened up the Summer League with a thrilling 107-106 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.
In that game, Marial Shayok scored 19 points while rookie Matisse Thybulle scored 7 and Zhaire Smith recorded 10. The Sixers would then lose their next three games to the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Detroit Pistons. In the Thunder game, the team rallied from 31 points down to force overtime. However, in the overtime, the Thunder recovered to win 84-81. Finishing 1-3 in the preliminary this would match the Sixers with the Toronto Raptors in the consolation round.
Going out with a bang
The Sixers finished off their Vegas trip on a positive note with a 108-102 win over the Raptors.
PJ Dozier finished with 22 points to help fuel the Sixers. Hayward Highsmith also scored 16. Now, of course, the team would have liked to be playing and have a shot at the championship but a lot of positives can be taken from this week.
Smith, Thybulle and Shayok impress
The Summer League is more about your young players impressing. Smith and Thybulle are expected to be key pieces off the bench this year and both looked good. Smith over five games averaged 12.4 points and showcased great athleticism getting up for several impressive dunks.
Thybulle made his mark on defense as he averaged 11.6 points and had several impressive defensive plays. Shayok is another player who could carve out some minutes and he put the ball in the basket. He averaged 14.5 points per game over four games and could provide some scoring off the bench in Philly this season.
