For tonight’s game, we will take a different angle. Through two games we’ve showcased five players to watch for. However, tonight being the third preseason game is a different approach. This being the dress rehearsal game for the regular season starters tend to play the majority of the first half. We might even see Carson Wentz tonight but who knows. Tonights Ravens vs Eagles game will be a good gauge for where the Eagles are entering the season.
The Ravens are a perfect team to match up against. Let’s analyze what to watch for.
1. Josh McCown makes his Eagles debut
Signed last Saturday to a one-year deal Josh McCown will make his team debut tonight. McCown signed a deal worth up to 5.4 million dollars. With a figure like that he’s going to make the roster. Tonight will be a chance to get loose as he’s come out of retirement. It will also be a great chance to hook up with some of the Eagles weapons. Fingers crossed no more quarterback injuries. Furthermore, we will also see Clayton Thorson who had a good week of practice against the Ravens. Thorson is destined for the practice squad. The 40-year-old veteran will look to impress against a stout Ravens defense.
2. How the Eagles defend the run
The Eagles defense will be in for a tough task tonight. The Ravens possess one of the games most unique offenses. Centered around a star in the making Lamar Jackson and his running ability the Ravens bring in their pistol run-heavy attack. This will be a great opportunity for the Eagles front seven to get down and dirty trying to stop them.
The corners should have an easier night tonight as the Ravens don’t utilize their receivers a ton. They will focus on the tight ends which will keep the linebackers and safeties busy. While we won’t see all the Ravens tricks tonight this will be good practice for week one. The Redskins figure to bring in a run-heavy attack with Adrian Peterson and potentially former LSU standpoint Derrius Guice.
3. The running backs battle
One final thing to watch for tonight will be the battle between the running backs. Yes, we know Miles Sanders, Jordan Howard, and Darren Sproles are locked into roles but who will start. Last week fans got a little more of a taste at just how good Miles Sanders is.
It’s looking more and more like he could open the season as the primary back. Howard has also looked good and figures to be the short-yardage and goal-line back. Then we have the backups. Donnel Pumphrey turned heads last week and with his ability to contribute on special teams could be closing in on a roster spot.
Boston Scott found the end zone last week and is also trying to fight for a spot. Then that leaves us with Josh Adams and Wendell Smallwood. Adams scored last week but also lost a fumble which he has struggled with. Smallwood runs hard but doesn’t really do much else. Tonight we should get the picture here should become a bit more clear.
Ravens vs Eagles
Ravens vs Eagles kicks off from Lincoln Financial Field at 7:30. We are just two weeks away from the start of the NFL’s 100th season. What will you be looking forward to seeing during tonight’s game?
