Is Nate Sudfeld poised to be the Eagles backup quarterback of the future?

Sudfeld poised to breakout

Eagles quarterback Nate Sudfeld is in a prime position as the preseason approaches. With Carson Wentz expected to miss the preseason that leaves two other options. As a result, Nick Foles will act as the starting quarterback which means outside of the third preseason game he will not see a ton of work. Following Foles, the only other quarterback on the roster is Joe Callahan. Is Sudfeld poised to be a factor in the future?

The former Hoosier is ready to shine

The California native began his career in D.C as the Redskins drafted him in the sixth round of the 2016 draft. However behind Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy Sudfeld became the odd man out. The Eagles proceeded to sign Sudfeld the next day to their practice squad.

In his first career outing in week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys, the former Hoosier made the most of it. He completed 19 of 23 passes for 134 yards. Although the Eagles ended up being shutout 6-0 his 82.6% completion percentage was the highest by any player in their first game in the Super Bowl era with a minimum of 20 attempts.

The backup quarterback of the future

Now we know Wentz will be the quarterback of the future no argument there. His backup, however, is more of an uncertainty. Foles has a 20 million dollar player option due after this season. If the Eagles chose not to pick it up and the two sides cant work out a deal the team could decide to roll with Sudfeld.

At just 24 years old and standing 6’6 227 pounds Sudfeld has all the intangibles you want in a quarterback. He also some mobility as well. With a strong preseason Sudfeld not only will make the roster but depending on the Foles situation could find himself as the teams primary backup quarterback in the future.

Opportunity there for the taking

Should Sudfeld make the roster that means another position will be cut short. The Eagles first preseason game will be against the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 9th. In addition, this will be Sudfelds first chance to really showcase his talent. We will find out over the course of the next two months what the former Redskin is all about.
