Billy Brown Poised For Breakout Year?
The tight end position is one that has quickly turned into a position of need in Philadelphia. Currently, the only tight ends on the roster are Zach Ertz and Billy Brown. Consequently, with longtime Eagle Brent Celek being released to clear cap space and Trey Burton signing with Chicago the Eagles need a solution and fast. I’m sure the team will look to free agency as well as next months draft. With that said the answer might just be on the roster already. Entering his second season is Billy Brown poised for a breakout year?
Shepherd University Standout
At Shepherd, Brown was dominant. In his four seasons with the Rams, Brown finished his career as the school leader in receptions (249), receiving yards (4071) and receiving touchdowns (49). During his senior season, Brown finished with 99 catches for 1580 yards and 22 touchdowns. All three totals set single-season school records. Furthermore, the yards and touchdowns ranked second nationally.
These accolades earned Brown the 2017 American Football Networks Division II Player of the Year Award. As a result, Brown became the first Shepherd player to ever participate in the East-West Shrine game and only the second player to participate in the NFL Combine.
Versatile Receiving Threat
The Eagles love players who have Versatility. Brown is a converted receiver and at 6’4 255 has the size needed. He also ran a 4.7 forty time. Brown was on the practice squad all of last season and was a standout in training camp. During last year’s preseason, Brown compiled eight catches for 51 yards in three games.

Next Man Up
Brown could in position to be the next Trey Burton. Like Brown, Burton was also an undrafted free agent signing who worked his way up. His hard work paid off, as he was rewarded with a four year, $32 million dollar deal to join the Bears.
Brown has been able to learn from two of the best in Celek and Ertz and that could prove vital. While Brown put up monster numbers in college, he could develop a key role similar to Burton and fellow undrafted Free agent Corey Clement.
What Can Brown Do For You
Tight end will certainly be a position of interest this offseason but Brown will certainly have his opportunity to shine. If Brown continues to show and prove, he too could have a nice payday in the near future. Furthermore, A four-year star at Shepherd University and with an opportunity ahead of him has Billy Brown poised for a breakout year.
