Todd McShay selects a cornerback to the Eagles in his mock draft 3.0

McShays, mock draft 3.0

On Wednesday, March 6th ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay released his mock draft 3.0. Now in the first mock draft, he released McShay had the Eagles selecting cornerback Deandre Baker. In his second mock draft, he had Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence going to the Birds at 25. Now in his mock draft, 3.0 McShay is back to the secondary with Temple cornerback Rock Ya-Sin.

Ya-Sin adding to a talented secondary

Now Ya-Sin is a talented corner. During his senior season with the Owls, he totaled 47 tackles 14 passes defended and two interceptions.

Before reaching Philly Ya-Sin was a standout for Presbyterian College of the FCS. In 2017 he finished first-team all-Big South starting all 11 games. At 6’2 190 the Temple corner does have the size and length that the Eagles covet in their defensive backs. Furthermore, he played his home games last season in Lincoln Financial Field. While the Georgia native has the size and ability this pick just doesn’t make sense.

Why cornerback?

Ya-Sin had a very good combine. He ran a 4.51 40 time, had a vertical jump of 39.5 inches and finally a broad jump of 120 inches. Furthermore, he impressed in the drills and showed nice ball skills. McShay stated that “We all know the Eagles want to fix the secondary, and while the Philly faithful might be clamoring for Greedy Williams here, I like Ya-Sins’ full skill toolbox. He impressed me at the combine and deserves first-round consideration”.

Williams will be long gone and cbssports.com has him as the number 65 overall prospect and seventh rated corner. He will be there into the second maybe even third round and even if the Eagles want to address the secondary there are bigger needs unless say Williams somehow fell to 25. There is no need to reach for a corner when you already have a stable secondary.

Corners corners corners

A few weeks ago Mel Kiper had cornerback Trayvon Mullen from Clemson being selected to the Eagles. The secondary can always be improved and depth is critical as we saw last year. However, the pick at 25 I believe should be either a defensive tackle or linebacker. Tim Jernigan will be a free agent which opens up a hole in the defense. With Jordan Hicks also a free agent the Eagles will need a linebacker as well.

With Jalen Mills, Rasul Douglas, Cre’Von Leblanc, Sidney Jones, and Avonte Maddox those are five young and talented corners that will compete for starting jobs. Ya-Sin would add a sixth name to that if selected at 25 and unless he blew everyone away it’s hard to say how much playing time he would see.

One month from the draft

The draft is just over a month away. Do you agree with the Eagles selecting a Ya-Sin at 25?
