Phillies add Ramos as the trade deadline rapidly approaches
The Philadelphia Phillies have traded for Rays C Wilson Ramos, just before the trade deadline. The Phillies desperately needed help at the plate, and the 6 foot 1 catcher provides a huge boost when they need it most. The Rays will receive a player to be named later in return for the two-time all-star.
Ramos will be a huge upgrade at the middle of the lineup, no matter how you move the pieces around. Thinking of Rhys Hoskins, Odubel Herrera, Ramos, Maikel Franco, and Carlos Santana is just scary. However rookie manager Gabe Kapler will decide how to put the line up together, Ramos will add something the Phillies have been lacking all year offensively: consistency.

Boosting the lineup
The 2018 AL all-star has an impressive slash line of .297/.346/.488 which would immediately make him the Phillies best hitter statistically. As far as the catching position goes, the Phils have gotten solid production out of Jorge Alfaro (.247/.318/.372) but Ramos is an upgrade at the position in 2018. Among catchers in the MLB Ramos ranks third for OPS, third for home runs, and third for average.
Ramos has 14 home runs this year, which makes him the sixth player with 10 or more home runs on the Phillies. He also has an OPS of .821 the last three years. More impressive is his .297 average which is good for the best on the team, passing Herrera at .278.
Defining Klentak at the trade deadline
Although it appears Alfaro is indeed the future, perhaps he can learn from the two-time all-star. The 25-year-old has one of the best arms in the league but he has a lot to work on as far as blocking balls and calling games. Making this move at the trade deadline was a huge win for Klentak and the Phillies.

The club has talked about upgrading the defense at both catcher and shortstop. Strengthening the team with Cabrera and now Ramos shows that Klentak is ready to compete. He is showing the fans that he has confidence in this team to win now.
Ramos has been on the 10 day DL with a hamstring strain since July 23rd and is projected to return mid-August. The Phillies have Designated Zac Curtis for assignment as a corresponding move. They have mentioned they will not be giving up any of their top 30 prospects.
The front office still has about an hour left on Tuesday to try and add to the bullpen before the trade deadline is up.
