The Waterboys Initiative
Recently, Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long climbed Mount Kilimanjaro along with Nate Boyer, and several NFL players and retired military members. However, this was not the first time that Long made the summit. Chris Long first climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2014. Shortly after, he founded the Waterboys initiative.
The foundation partners, NFL players and fans to help bring clean drinking water to East Africa. So far, his foundation and efforts have helped build 32 wells.
In 2015, the Waterboys initiative expanded to help bring awareness to homelessness, youths, and military appreciation. As most Philadelphia fans know, Chris Long played the regular season for free, partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Virginia, donating his first six game checks to fund scholarships for students.
While first helping out his hometown, he then donated his final ten regular season game checks to educational organizations in Philadelphia, Boston, and St. Louis. Not only did he help his hometown, but also all three cities he spent time during his NFL career.
Conquering Kili Once Again
This journey was the 3rd annual summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Through Chris Long’s WaterBoys initiative, he and Nate Boyer, former NFL long snapper and Green Beret founded the Conquering Kili program. The program brings together NFL players and retired military members to summit Africa’s massive mountain.
The purpose of the program is to raise money to fund more wells through the Waterboys initiative. This year’s goal for the 2018 Conquering Kili class is $150,000. So far, they have raised almost $118,000.
